Leather pumps: what the word on the label means

A pump is a style. Leather is a label claim, and the FTC Guides cover it.

The style

Pump and court shoe are style names that makers and retailers use. We do not define them here. The maker's listing and photos show what a given shoe is.

The material is a label claim

Material words on a shoe are the maker's label, not ours. We never say any shoe is leather. Part 24 lists "footwear" among the products it covers.

What the FTC Guides say

The FTC Leather Guides say it is "unfair or deceptive to use the unqualified term 'leather' or other unqualified terms suggestive of leather to describe industry products unless the industry product so described is composed in all substantial parts of leather."

The site name

Leather Pumps is the name of this site. It is not a statement that any shoe discussed here is made of leather.

What we do not do

We do not name brands, designers, or products, give prices, or say any shoe suits you. Makers' size charts vary; check the maker's chart and return policy.

A style, and a label. Read the label for each part.

FAQ

Both are style names that makers and retailers use. The maker's listing is the source for a given shoe.
No. We do not name brands, designers, stores, or products.

General information only, not medical advice. Material labels are the maker's: check the label for each part of the shoe. Fit varies by maker and by person, so check the maker's size chart and the return policy. If you have foot pain or a foot or health condition, talk to your doctor or a podiatrist.
